THE STAKES

Georgia Southern leads the all-time series 5-0: Georgia Southern 10-0 in 1992, Georgia Southern 51-32 in 1998, Georgia Southern 51-14 in 1999, Georgia Southern 41-3 in 2002, Georgia Southern 41-34 last year in Statesboro. This is the first meeting in Jacksonville since 1999 and the first time since 1998-99 the teams have played in consecutive seasons. Jax State OC Taylor Housewright spent 2024 on Georgia Southern's coaching staff.

Jax State is 1-2 after a 33-7 loss at NDSU, a 49-7 win over EKU and a 29-27 four-overtime loss at Ohio. Kelly's teams are 6-0 after losses at Jax State and have not lost consecutive games since Weeks 2 and 3 of 2024.

Georgia Southern is 1-1 after a 31-0 shutout of Charleston Southern and a 22-7 loss at Clemson. Helton is 9-16 on the road at Georgia Southern and 4-19 when trailing at halftime.

Clay Helton is in his fifth season at Georgia Southern (28-26) after six full seasons and parts of two others at USC (46-24), where he led the Trojans to a Rose Bowl and a Pac-12 Championship. The Eagles returned zero of 11 offensive starters this year and brought in 46 newcomers — 24 transfers, 22 true freshmen. Georgia Southern is 1-1 with a defense that has transformed under new coordinator Mike Mutz, allowing 11.0 points per game and opponents converting just 21.9% on third down. The Eagles have made four consecutive bowl appearances, winning eight games in 2024 and seven in 2025, including a Birmingham Bowl win over rival App State.

WHEN GEORGIA SOUTHERN HAS THE BALL

The matchup tilts toward Georgia Southern through the air. Max Johnson grades just 43.5 on PFF (126 snaps) despite the clean stat line — 62.1% completion, zero interceptions — but his pass-blocking is elite. Ty Furnish grades 89.1 in pass-blocking, Brandon Stoner 87.4, Mo Clipper Jr. 82.4. If Johnson gets time, the targets are there. Ashton Hollins has 13 catches, 203 yards and touchdowns in consecutive games. Jeremiah Ware (71.3 PFF OFF) had four catches in each of his first two games after entering the season with zero career receptions. Josh Dallas tied a career high with nine catches at Clemson.

Jax State's secondary is built around Tre'Quon Fegans (66.9 COV, 185 snaps), who has allowed one reception on 78 coverage snaps this season. Kelly said teams have stayed away from him. JQ Brooks (76.9 COV, 152 snaps) is the highest-graded full-time corner. Caleb Nix (88.5 COV, 178 snaps) anchors the back end. The question is whether Johnson can exploit Ayden Jackson (47.5 COV, 88 snaps), who has 17 tackles on ESPN but grades 46.8 overall on PFF.

The run game is the concern. Georgia Southern averages 92.0 rushing yards per game across a five-man committee with no clear lead back — Taeo Todd, Ty Cummings, David Mbadinga, Jamarian Samuel and Terrance Gibbs (questionable). The OL run-blocking grades lag the pass-blocking: Furnish drops from 89.1 PBLK to 60.4 RBLK, Stoner from 87.4 to 61.7. Jax State allows 189.7 rushing yards per game (8th CUSA), and the interior DL grades are average — Jawaun Campbell 69.8, Marquis Hood 67.4. The gap between Georgia Southern's weak run-blocking and Jax State's run defense is the matchup to watch on the ground.

WHEN JACKSONVILLE STATE HAS THE BALL

The pass-protection matchup matters most here. Georgia Southern has eight sacks in two games under Mike Mutz after recording 12 all of last season. MJ Stroud (82.5 RDEF, 71.0 PRSH, 6 pressures, 0.5 sacks) and Anthony Bynum (77.8 RDEF, 7 pressures, 1 sack) lead a front that ranks second in the FBS averaging 12.0 tackles for loss per game. Jax State's pass-blocking is uneven — Ryan Walker grades 81.7 PBLK, Andrevius Smith 82.8, Lance Johnson 80.1, but Ryland Bragg grades 9.8 PBLK in 40 snaps and Cam Stancil 56.4 in 58. Caden Creel has taken four sacks through three games.

Creel (66.9 PFF OFF, 190 snaps) is the engine. He grades 69.7 as a passer and 57.4 as a runner, but Kelly does not hesitate to use him on the ground — 54 carries, 218 yards, two touchdowns. His 29 carries at Ohio were a career high. Helton acknowledged it: "They don't mind running him 15, 20 times in a game and then mixing up the passes with it to some big targets. I mean, one of them 6-9." Kelly: "Scared money doesn't make money."

The receiving corps has size. Deondre Johnson (70.1 OFF, 161 snaps, 6-8) led the NCAA in yards per reception last year at 24.13. Jamill Williams (78.2 OFF, 67 snaps) went 7-144-5 vs. EKU — first Jax State receiver with four TD receptions in a game since Alan Bonner in 2012. Luke Gilbert (66.3 OFF, 106 snaps) has a 34.5-yard average on four catches, including an 82-yard score. Jalen Likely (70.5 OFF, 59 snaps — questionable) averages 7.6 yards per carry and grades 79.1 in pass-blocking.

Georgia Southern's defense allows 79.0 rushing yards and 232.0 total yards per game. Aaron Sears (79.0 DEF, 86.1 TACK, 77.6 COV) is the best full-time defender. Rashon Myles Jr. leads the team with 19 tackles but grades 33.0 in tackling — a missed-tackle problem. Ayden Jackson has 17 tackles and an interception but grades 46.8 overall with 47.5 in coverage. The tackling grades are the disconnect between the ESPN box score and PFF's assessment of this defense.

The coaching connection: Taylor Housewright spent 2024 on Georgia Southern's staff. Helton: "It's no surprise to me — Coach Housewright. Taylor Housewright, offensive coordinator, was here. Got to see it firsthand the ideas he brings to the park, the type of coach he is."

GEORGIA SOUTHERN WINS IF

The run game produces against Jax State's 189.7-yard rush defense and interior DL grades of Jawaun Campbell 69.8 and Marquis Hood 67.4. Georgia Southern pass-blocking (Ty Furnish 89.1, Brandon Stoner 87.4) gives Max Johnson time to work to Ashton Hollins and Jeremiah Ware.

Mike Mutz's front contains Caden Creel's rushing and forces him to throw behind Ryland Bragg (9.8 PBLK) and Cam Stancil (56.4 PBLK). MJ Stroud and Anthony Bynum have combined for 13 pressures and 1.5 sacks in two games.

JACKSONVILLE STATE WINS IF

The Gamecocks sustain drives and control the clock. Jax State held the ball for three consecutive second-half possessions at Ohio totaling 13:10 and 33 plays. Third-down conversion rate: 18-of-27 over the last two games after 2-of-10 at NDSU.

The defense forces turnovers against Max Johnson. Zero interceptions through two games. PFF 43.5 offensive grade on 126 snaps. Jax State has three interceptions and a forced fumble this season.

X FACTOR

AmFirst Stadium. The Gamecocks are 313-110-8 all-time at home (.735) and 86-19 in their last 105 home games. Helton: "It's not easy to go there at AmFirst Stadium. I think the last 90 games they've won 77 of them. It's a hard place to play, hard place to go to."

COACH SPEAK

Charles Kelly, Jacksonville State: "I got a ton of respect for Clay Helton. We've known each other, I don't know, since 1990. He's an old OC, quarterback coach. I think he does a really good job. You can see his fingerprints all over them offensively. In fact, in my mind, he's one of the better quarterback guys that college football's seen."

Clay Helton, Georgia Southern: "Charles Kelly's been known as one of the best defensive coordinators in the country for a long time. You can see his DNA all over this defense. We felt it last year. You can feel it this year. It was a war last year here. We came out on the front end of it. I expect the same thing this week."

DIEHARD BOTTOM LINE

This is potentially a crossroads game for the Gamecocks. The loss at Ohio was frustrating and disappointing. The fan base is beginning to question why Jax State can stack up wins in Conference USA but has struggled in non-conference games against FBS teams. Since 2023, they are 3-11 in such games. Georgia Southern represents an opportunity to change that narrative. And make no mistake, the Eagles will arrive in Jacksonville fully confident they can leave with a victory. Jacksonville State is a bit banged up, and so, perhaps, is the pride and ego. The best remedy for that is to pull together Saturday, play a clean game and finish the job. I think Saturday is when we see Caden Creel step up with some big plays with his feet and in the passing game. That and the home crowd will push the Gamecocks over the top.
