THE STAKES

The Sun Belt West. A Bulldog win gives Louisiana Tech a two-game lead over the next closest team with four conference games to play and the tiebreaker over South Alabama. A South Alabama victory gives them a share of first place and a tiebreaker over Louisiana Tech.

The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 2-1. The last meeting was Sept. 24, 2022, at Hancock Whitney Stadium. South Alabama won 38-14. Cumbie on that game: "I remember in '22 when we went there... and we got our tail kicked."

THE NUMBERS

+14 — Louisiana Tech's turnover margin. The Bulldogs have forced 18 turnovers and committed 4.

0-7 — South Alabama's record since 2024 when throwing at least one interception, tied for the worst mark in FBS.

ABOUT LOUISIANA TECH

The Bulldogs started the year 1-2 with road losses at LSU (45-14) and Baylor (36-19), then won four straight — a 31-29 win over Army, a 32-31 win at Louisiana, then consecutive shutouts of ULM and Old Dominion with a combined scoring margin of 50-0. Louisiana Tech is 6-1 against the spread this season and has covered in 8 of its last 10 games per Covers.

The offense operates a two-quarterback system — Blake Baker handles the passing and Trey Kukuk is the dual-threat option. The defense has carried the four-game winning streak.

Louisiana Tech's road record this season is 1-2, though both losses came to Power 4 opponents. The Bulldogs' only conference road game was a 24-0 shutout at ULM. Cumbie on playing in Mobile: "I believe that was my first year here and we got our tail kicked. I mean, they absolutely got after us and they had a great crowd."

ABOUT SOUTH ALABAMA

The Jaguars are 4-3 and coming off a loss at Marshall where the offense managed 13 points — its lowest output of the season. South Alabama scores 35.1 points per game and allows 32.4.

Jared Hollins is the starting quarterback per Major Applewhite's Monday presser, though Applewhite acknowledged the production hasn't been where it needs to be: "We got to play better and we got to coach better."

South Alabama's passing offense has faded late in games — 6.3 yards per completion in the fourth quarter this season per BetMGM, second-worst in FBS.

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

Alonzo Jackson Jr., LB, Louisiana Tech — 49 total tackles, 12.5 TFL, 6.5 sacks. Leads all Sun Belt players with 5.0 TFL through the first three conference games. His sack and TFL totals rank among the top 5 in FBS. PFF grades: 84.1 pass rush, 81.5 run defense. Chuck Bednarik Award candidate. At LSU he posted 12 tackles, 3 sacks and 3.5 TFL.

Eli Finley, TE, Louisiana Tech — 82.1 PFF grade. 39 receptions, 462 yards, 5 touchdowns, 66.0 receiving yards per game. John Mackey Award watch list. NFL scouts visited fall camp to evaluate him. 35 receptions shy of 100 career catches, 232 yards shy of 1,000 career receiving yards. Louisiana Tech runs more than a quarter of its pass targets (26.8%) through the tight end position.

Keenan Phillips, HB, South Alabama — 81.5 PFF grade. Leads the three-back rotation alongside PJ Martin (81.0) and Trae'von Dunbar (80.6). Cumbie on the South Alabama backs: "They're really, really hard to tackle from the standpoint of Keenan Phillips and PJ Martin."

Damyrion Darby, CB, South Alabama — 72.2 PFF grade, 79.8 pass rush grade from the nickel, 72.9 coverage grade. 3 interceptions, 9 pressures, 3 sacks. Cumbie singled him out: "Dearan Darby, number 24, he has three interceptions. Plays nickel for him, plays safety for him. Does a really nice job there. Is very active."

INJURY REPORT / AVAILABILITY

Louisiana Tech

  • Dylone Brooks, RB — status unclear (Cumbie: "I'm hopeful"; Covers lists as Out; Cappers lists as Probable). Brooks (78.3 PFF grade) had 175 yards on 19 carries (9.2 avg) and a career game vs. Army (200+ all-purpose yards).
  • Judd Rouyea, DI — Questionable (Cumbie: "Hopefully we can get him back this week")

  • Maddox Lynch, TE — Out
  • Emmanuel Waller, DL — Questionable
  • Tirrell Johnson, LB — Questionable
  • Artem Korchagin Jr., OL — Questionable

South Alabama has four linebackers either out or questionable against an offense that runs gap-heavy concepts — power and counter — on more than half its rushing plays (50.5%). On the offensive line, Korchagin is questionable against a defense that has produced 20 sacks this season.

WHEN LOUISIANA TECH HAS THE BALL

Louisiana Tech throws short and gets rid of the ball fast. The average pass target lands just 7.2 yards downfield. Nearly 1 in 5 passes is a screen. More than a quarter of all throws go behind the line of scrimmage. The quarterback holds the ball an average of 2.68 seconds before releasing. Baker has completed 72.2% of his passes this season with 10 touchdowns against one interception. In conference play he's been sharper — 75-of-97 (77.3%) for 800 yards and 6 touchdowns: 32-42 for 319 yards and 3 TDs vs. Louisiana, 15-21 for 178 and 2 TDs vs. ULM, 28-34 for 303 and 1 TD vs. Old Dominion.

South Alabama's defense blitzes on 61.8% of plays per PFF. The blitz generates pressure on 28.5% of dropbacks but produces sacks on just 6.1%. The Jaguars' coverage unit grades below average per PFF at both the linebacker and secondary positions — the spots vacated when those extra rushers go.

That coverage weakness runs into Louisiana Tech's tight end room. Finley and Bockler (70.2 PFF grade) have caught 7 touchdowns in the red zone this season — tied for third-most in FBS per BetMGM. South Alabama allows a 103.74 passer rating, opponents complete 67.1% of their passes, and the Jaguars have given up 13 touchdown passes in the red zone — tied for the most in FBS.

Kukuk (77.3 PFF grade, 187 snaps) adds a running dimension when he enters — 4.8 yards per carry with 2 rushing touchdowns. South Alabama has allowed 7.7 yards per scramble per PFF.

Louisiana Tech's offensive tackles — Christman (75.2 PFF grade) and Troy Smith III (73.0 overall, 71.5 run blocking) — grade above average per PFF. South Alabama's Mase Lewis (73.9 pass rush grade, 11 pressures, 2 sacks) and Tre'Mon Henry (66.6 pass rush, 11 pressures, 3 batted passes) match up against them. Louisiana Tech's interior offensive line grades below average as a unit per PFF.

Jalen Mickens (77.2 PFF grade, 83.7 receiving yards per game) has back-to-back 100-yard receiving games and started 2026 with a 75-yard touchdown reception on the first play of the season. He and Finley are the first Louisiana Tech receiving duo to post 100 yards each in the same game since 2023.

WHEN SOUTH ALABAMA HAS THE BALL

South Alabama runs the ball 56% of the time. The three-back rotation has produced 1,389 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. Defenders stop them at or behind the line on just 14.9% of carries. The offensive tackles — Ethan Hubbard (81.3 PFF grade, 77.4 run blocking) and Reese Osei-Wusu (67.6 overall, 65.8 run blocking) — set the edge on a zone-heavy scheme built on outside zone (31.9%) and inside zone (28.3%).

Louisiana Tech allows 3.9 yards per carry and stop runners at or behind the line on 25.8% of carries per PFF. Only 36.3% of rushing plays against Louisiana Tech gain a first down or score. The last two weeks: 50 combined rushing yards allowed per PicksWise. Last week, 12 of 22 rush attempts were stopped at or behind the line — a 55% rate, the best single-game mark in FBS per BetMGM. The run defense PFF grades go deep across the front: Taeden Rogers (89.5), Jadon Mayfield (86.0), Jackson Jr. (81.5), Sam Fongang (81.8), Kolbe Fields (79.0), Donovan Rieman (76.9).

South Alabama uses play action on 36.0% of its passes — a rate that depends on the run game commanding attention. Louisiana Tech plays man coverage on 42.6% of snaps. Hollins (65.7 PFF grade, 364 snaps) and Bishop Davenport (71.4, 160 snaps) throw to Brendan Jenkins (70.0 PFF) and Jeremiah Jones-Thomas (68.6) on the perimeter. South Alabama's average pass target goes 10.1 yards downfield — nearly three yards deeper than Louisiana Tech's 7.2 on offense. South Alabama produces an explosive pass (15+ yards) on 18.8% of attempts; Louisiana Tech allows one on 17.0%.

South Alabama completes 59.1% of its passes for a 95.27 passer rating per PFF. Louisiana Tech's defense allows a 59.8% completion rate and a 70.47 passer rating. The Bulldogs have 10 interceptions spread across the roster: McRae (3), Franklin (2), Rogers (1), Jackson Jr. (1), Butler (1) and others.

South Alabama has 169 scramble yards on the season per PFF. Louisiana Tech has allowed 8.6 yards per scramble and 3 scramble touchdowns per PFF. Applewhite said the offense will need patience: "It may not take on the complexion of an Arkansas State, Louisiana Monroe game. We've got to be patient in those situations and just stay in the ball game."

Louisiana Tech gets pressure on a third of all dropbacks (33.6%) and produces sacks on 8.5% per PFF. South Alabama's offense has been sacked on just 3.2% of passing plays.

LOUISIANA TECH WINS IF

The Bulldogs win the turnover battle. Louisiana Tech has averaged 1.60 interceptions per game since 2024 (32 in 20 games).

The front shuts down South Alabama's run game. South Alabama averages 198.4 designed rushing yards per game and uses play action on 36.0% of its passes — if the run game doesn't move the chains, the play action loses its setup.

The kicking game doesn't become a factor. Hunter Rioux is 3-of-7 on field goals (42.9%). Kaegan Kent is 2-of-6 (33.3%). South Alabama's opponents are 33.3% on field goals — the worst conversion rate against in FBS per Covers.

SOUTH ALABAMA WINS IF

South Alabama protects the football. Applewhite: "Execution is going to be at a premium against a good defense like this."

The run game answers Louisiana Tech's front. Louisiana Tech allowed 50 combined rushing yards over its last two games.

The defense creates a takeaway. Louisiana Tech's offense has committed 4 turnovers in 7 games. Baker faces pressure on 30.4% of his dropbacks with a 7.2% sack rate per PFF.

X FACTOR

South Alabama's blitz rate (61.8%) against Louisiana Tech's quick passing game. The Jaguars send extra rushers on nearly two out of every three plays, but the pressure converts to sacks on just 6.1% of dropbacks. Baker releases in 2.68 seconds. The coverage thins behind the blitz, and that's where Finley and Mickens operate. Whether the blitz gets home before Baker gets the ball out is the play that will repeat all afternoon.

COACH SPEAK

Major Applewhite, South Alabama, on Louisiana Tech's defense:

"This is not a boxer that drops his gloves very often and keeps his chin high. They do the right things and they play the right way."

Sonny Cumbie, Louisiana Tech, on South Alabama's rushing attack:

"Number one rush offense in all of the Sun Belt. And they do it with two different backs that are really, really productive. They're really, really hard to tackle from the standpoint of Keenan Phillips and PJ Martin."

South Alabama's running backs have averaged 5.4 yards per carry on 972 carries since 2024 — tied for 31st-best.

DIEHARD BOTTOM LINE

The key word for this game is urgency. South Alabama must have it Saturday. The loss at Marshall was such a disappointment and such a missed opportunity, but now the Jaguars really cannot afford to lose this one if they want to maintain real traction toward the Sun Belt championship. The Jaguars need to turn this one into a slugfest. To win, they'll need to be the more physical team, and they will need to prove they can run the football against a LaTech defense that can shut down the run. At home, the Jags will do just that and will sneak out a crucial, and perhaps season-defining, victory. South Alabama 27, Louisiana Tech 24.

Season record: 207-64 (.764 SU, .536 ATS)

South Alabama picks: 5-1 SU (.833), 4-2 ATS (.667)
