The Postgame Report: Troy 24, Sam Houston 21

Gerad Parker wanted to run the ball and win the turnover battle. Troy did both — and still needed a third-down conversion with 63 seconds left to put it away. Goose Crowder threw three touchdown passes, Troy's defense suffocated Sam Houston's ground game and the Trojans (1-0) held off the Bearkats 24-21 in the season opener at Veterans Memorial Stadium in front of 24,356.

Troy outrushed Sam Houston 177-38, recorded 13 tackles for loss and four sacks, and did not turn the ball over. But Landyn Locke threw for 335 yards and three touchdowns for Sam Houston (0-1), and the Bearkats pulled within three on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Locke to Chris Reed with 63 seconds remaining. Troy recovered the onside kick, and Crowder hit Fabian Rogosch for 16 yards on third-and-6 to seal it.

Rogosch's catch was a fitting punctuation mark. The fifth-year player began his career as a defensive end and spent his Troy tenure as a blocking tight end and special teams contributor. His first career reception — ever — was a 19-yard touchdown from Crowder in the first quarter. His third was the one that ended the game.

WHAT IT MEANS

Troy enters Year 3 under Parker with the program's identity firmly established: the Trojans are going to run the football and play defense. The 38 rushing yards allowed were the second fewest under Parker, behind 31 against Southern Miss in 2024. The 13 tackles for loss were the most Troy has recorded since a 15-TFL performance against South Alabama on Oct. 15, 2024. Donnie Smith, the Sun Belt's preseason Defensive Player of the Year, picked up right where he left off with a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss.

The concern is the back end of the defense. Locke completed 30 of 46 passes and moved the ball consistently through the air, and the Bearkats' final drive — 85 yards in nine plays — exposed a secondary that will see better passing attacks in Sun Belt play. Parker acknowledged as much: "We outrushed them. That's important, but they threw for a bunch."

THE TURNING POINT

The first play of the second half. Sam Houston received the opening kickoff with the score tied at 14, and Locke's first pass was intercepted by TJ Thompson at the Sam Houston 32. Thompson returned it 18 yards to the 14-yard line, and Troy converted the short field into an Ethan Head 32-yard field goal — his first career make — for a 17-14 lead Troy would not relinquish.

Parker said at halftime the turnover margin would decide the game. "We talked about it at halftime, didn't know it would happen the very next play out of half," he said. "The turnover was massive by TJ Thompson, and our defense was so good in the third and most of the fourth quarter until a critical error there late in the game."

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Good: The run defense. Sam Houston managed 38 yards on 24 carries — 1.6 per attempt. Troy's four sacks cost Locke 32 yards, and the Bearkats' backs were bottled up behind a Troy front that generated pressure all night. Keno Jones led the way with three tackles for loss. Ty Clemons and Jordan Perry each added a sack. The Trojans have now recorded four or more sacks 19 times since the start of the 2022 season and are 17-2 in those games.

Bad: Pass protection. Crowder absorbed four sacks, and Sam Houston's pass rush — led by linebackers Elijah Groves (1.5 sacks) and Brian Bates Jr. (1.0 sack) — collapsed the pocket consistently. Crowder's 12-of-24 line (50 percent) is partly a function of pressure limiting his ability to work through progressions. The offensive line must improve before Sun Belt play.

Ugly: The secondary in the fourth quarter. Sam Houston's game-tying drive in the second quarter (75 yards, six plays, 2:55) and the final scoring drive (85 yards, nine plays, 3:17) both featured Locke picking apart the coverage underneath. Troy's defense dominated three quarters and nearly gave it back in the fourth. That cannot happen against Louisiana or South Alabama.

THE STATS THAT MATTER

Sam Houston: 38 rushing yards on 24 carries (1.6 avg) — Troy's defensive front was the story. The 38 yards were the second fewest allowed under Parker, behind only 31 against Southern Miss in 2024. Sam Houston's leading rusher was Alton McCaskill with 51 yards on 13 carries — his long of 24 accounted for nearly half his total. Remove that run and the Bearkats managed 14 yards on 23 attempts. Troy won this game at the line of scrimmage on the defensive side.

Troy: 13 TFL, 4 sacks — The disruption numbers tell the story of a defense that lived in the Sam Houston backfield. Keno Jones had three tackles for loss. Donnie Smith had 1.5 and a sack. Ty Clemons had two and a sack. Jordan Perry added 1.5 and a sack. Keyshawn Campbell recorded the first sack of his career. Troy generated eight quarterback hurries. This is a defense built to wreck offensive rhythm, and it did.

Troy: 0 turnovers. Sam Houston: 1 INT — Troy did not turn the ball over for the first time since the ULM game last season (Oct. 18, 2025). The turnover margin was plus-one, and Parker called it the difference. Thompson's interception on the first play of the second half was the only takeaway, but in a three-point game, one turnover was enough.

3 STARS

1. Keno Jones, LB, Troy — 7 tackles, 3.0 TFL, 1 QH. Jones set the tone for the Troy defense with three stops behind the line. In his first career start, the linebacker was disruptive on every level — blowing up run plays, closing lanes and finishing at the ball carrier. The 3.0 TFL led the team.

2. Goose Crowder, QB, Troy — 12-of-24 passing, 165 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT; 9 rushes, 38 net yards. Crowder's numbers do not jump off the page, but the sixth-year quarterback made the throws that mattered — the 19-yard touchdown to Rogosch, the 28-yard strike to TK Keyes and the 18-yard scoring pass to TJ Lott that put Troy up 10 in the fourth quarter. He also converted the game-clinching third-and-6 to Rogosch. Zero turnovers in a three-point win.

3. Fabian Rogosch, TE, Troy — 3 receptions, 37 yards, 1 TD. The feel-good story of the opening weekend. A former defensive end who converted to tight end and spent his Troy career blocking and playing special teams, Rogosch caught his first career pass for a 19-yard touchdown, then sealed the win with a 16-yard catch on third-and-6 with a minute left. Parker's postgame quote said it best: "In the era of college football, for a guy to stick around here that long, stayed to it, and do what he's done — when we got here three years ago, I don't know if we would have ever thrown him a pass."

FINAL TAKEAWAYS

The offensive identity is evolving. Troy rushed for 177 yards on 42 carries behind a committee led by Gavin Griffin, who debuted with 81 yards on 16 carries (5.1 per attempt). Parker called Griffin "a really good blend of a power back and also a guy that can break away." Jordan Lovett added nine carries for 34 yards and Jaheim Merriweather contributed six carries for 22. Troy has now won nine of its last 10 games when rushing for 100 or more yards. The ground game is functional — and with Griffin showing the physicality Parker praised, it has room to grow.

The receiving corps is brand new. Six Trojans caught their first career pass at Troy in this game. Seven total players caught a pass. TK Keyes' first career catch was a 20-yard grab late in the first quarter; two plays later, he hauled in a 28-yard touchdown. Jace Petty, a fifth-year transfer from Arkansas, caught a 13-yard pass for his first career reception. The 165 passing yards were Crowder's fewest in a game with three or more touchdowns since the 2025 opener against Nicholls (144 yards, three touchdowns). The efficiency was there. The volume was not — and may not need to be if the run game and defense carry their weight.

Evan Crenshaw was the best player on the field who will not show up in most box score summaries. The preseason All-American and Ray Guy finalist punted eight times for a 46.9-yard average with five punts inside the 20-yard line and four traveling 50-plus yards, including a long of 55. In a three-point game, Crenshaw's ability to flip the field was as valuable as any touchdown.

The schedule context: Parker drew the parallel himself, comparing this opener to his Year 1 games against similar opponents. "You all saw that football team out there. That is a much improved football team. They looked really good. That's a physical football team that we just played," he said of Sam Houston. "I think in Year 3, for us to play a game like that in game one and finish it compared to a year one game of a Group of Six common opponent tells you something of what we could be if we continue to improve." Troy has Alabama State at home next week before the schedule ramps — the Trojans need to clean up the pass protection and tighten the secondary before that happens.
